Curriculum for Excellence

Love it or hate it, A Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) is almost upon us! With the arrival of our next group of young S1 pupils comes a variety of challenges and opportunities.

For many teachers of RME and RMPS in both Primary and Secondary sectors, many of the principles of the new curriculum are familiar – personal reflection, discussion in depth, collaborative and independent learning and an appreciation of the scope for connections between themes and learning in religious and moral education and other areas of the curriculum have all been bread and butter to Scottish teachers of RME.

However, how we assess progress and address all areas of the Experiences and Outcomes, as well as meeting our responsibilities in Literacy, Numeracy and Health and Wellbeing are challenges being addressed by teachers across Scotland.

ATRES recognises these challenges and concerns and has tailored the 2010 conference to support staff across both sectors, bringing in speakers from Learning & Teaching Scotland, HMIe, tutors from Strathclyde and Glasgow University as well as practioners who will share their experiences of the implementation process so far. Additionally, the conference affords teachers the invaluable opportunity to chat, catch up and hear more about what others are doing.

On our new website you’ll find links to all the familiar sites such as LTS but also forums for discussion of ideas or worries. Over the next few years too, we hope our resource library will grow to be an invaluable support to ATRES members for the sharing of ideas and materials.

A Curriculum for Excellence is an exciting and challenging time for all teachers in Scotland. ATRES has changed accordingly to provide and central forum for all practioners engaged in implementing these changes in RME.

We have compiled a collection of handy links for the various CfE documents relevant to teachers of RME.

Conference Update

We are pleased to announce a late addition to the programme for the conference. Dylan White, recently appointed Curriculum for Excellence Development Consultant for SQA, will be speaking on the current work being undertaken by SQA in developing the new National 4 and National 5 qualifications in RMPS. There will be an opportunity for questions and to offer feedback on the proposed changes.
